Why the long face
Pictured is Zeus, a Kings Troop military horse in his stable.
The Kings Troop Royal Horse Artillery has left the noise and confines of London for equestrian and military training in the north Norfolk coast and the rural idyll of Bodney Camp.
Almost 100 horses from The Kings Troop will be staying in Norfolk this month.
The visit to Norfolk is a vital military and equestrian training exercise which is impossible to deliver in the confines of a London-based barracks. Beach work in particular may look like fun; but it is an essential part of the never-ending work to build trust and confidence between horse and rider. Not all horses have the confidence to go into the churning surf, especially when the ground beneath their hooves shifts and sinks. But by trusting their rider and overcoming their fears, the bond between the two is made stronger; and this is vital for dealing with the unpredictable, during high-profile ceremonial duties back in London.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we see Zeus, a majestic military horse from the Kings Troop Royal Horse Artillery, in his stable. The Kings Troop has temporarily relocated from the bustling city of London to the serene north Norfolk coast and Bodney Camp for equestrian and military training. This month-long stay in Norfolk is crucial for their development as it offers opportunities that cannot be replicated within the confines of a London-based barracks. With almost 100 horses participating in this training exercise, it is evident that every aspect of their preparation is taken seriously. One such essential element is beach work, which may appear enjoyable but serves a greater purpose - building trust and confidence between horse and rider. Not all horses possess the courage to venture into churning surf or navigate shifting sands beneath their hooves. However, by placing faith in their riders and conquering their fears, an unbreakable bond forms between them. This bond becomes particularly vital when these magnificent creatures return to London for high-profile ceremonial duties. Dealing with unpredictability during such occasions requires unwavering trust between horse and rider. Through rigorous training like this coastal experience captured by Sgt Rupert Frere's lens – winner of the 2017 Army Photographic Competition – Zeus exemplifies resilience and determination while showcasing the extraordinary partnership forged within the Kings Troop Royal Horse Artillery.
