EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, Jimmy Hill, the charismatic and trailblazing figure of British football, stands confidently at the Dorchester Hotel in London, ready to address the assembled press corps. The year is 1965, and Hill, a Balham native, is making history once again. This time, he is not on the pitch as a player or a manager, but rather, he is about to embark on a new venture as the head of London Weekend Television Limited's Sports Unit. Hill's footballing journey began humbly as an amateur with Reading before he signed as a professional with Brentford. His talent did not go unnoticed, and he soon joined Fulham. However, it was off the pitch where Hill truly made his mark. In 1956, he became the chairman of the Professional Footballers Association (PFA), a role that would change the landscape of professional football forever. Hill's tenure saw him successfully negotiate a new deal for the players, culminating in the abolition of the maximum wage in 1960. In 1961, Hill took the reins at Coventry City, leading the club from the third to the first Division in an impressive five and a half years. His managerial prowess was undeniable, and his impact on the game was felt far beyond the pitch. Now, as he steps into the world of television, Hill is poised to leave his mark on a new industry, bringing his passion for football and his knack for innovation to a wider audience. This photograph captures a pivotal moment in Jimmy Hill's illustrious career, as he stands on the precipice of a new chapter in his footballing journey. The legacy he left behind on the pitch was already significant, but his influence off the pitch was just beginning.
