The Defeat of the Egyptian Army under Hicks Pasha by the Forces of the Mahdi

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a pivotal moment in history, depicting the tragic defeat of the Egyptian Army under Hicks Pasha by the forces of the Mahdi Muhummad Ahmad at El ObeidA on 5th November 1883. Painted in watercolor en grisaille by Charles Auguste Loye, this artwork is housed in London's National Army Museum. The painting portrays a fierce battle fought during the 1st Sudan War (1884-1885), where a powerful Mahdist army annihilated an Egyptian force sent to restore order after an Islamic revolt in Sudan. Led by William Hicks, a seasoned British veteran from Bombay Army serving under KhediveAs, this ill-fated expedition ended tragically for him and his men. Loye's masterful brushwork brings alive the intensity and chaos of this historic event. The composition highlights not only the bravery and determination displayed by both sides but also serves as a poignant reminder of war's devastating consequences. In this somber scene, we witness Hicks' ultimate sacrifice alongside countless soldiers who met their untimely demise. As if to further emphasize their defeat, it is said that Hicks' severed head was sent as a trophy to be presented before Mahdi himself. Through Loye's skillful interpretation and attention to detail, viewers are transported back in time to witness one of Sudan's most significant battles. This artwork stands as a testament to human resilience amid conflict while reminding us never to forget those who have fallen on these battlegrounds.
