EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning illuminated initial [Q] in blue and red with an interlace finial, dating back to the first quarter of the 15th century. The artwork is found in Ms 386, which contains Cicero's renowned work "De amicitia" along with other works. At the bas-de-page, two putti gracefully support arms amid white-stem decoration, possibly belonging to the prestigious Barbo family of Venice. This addition was made during the third quarter of the same century. The intricate details and vibrant colors of this manuscript demonstrate exceptional craftsmanship from an anonymous illuminator, potentially hailing from Venice. It offers a glimpse into the artistic brilliance prevalent during this period. Notably, f. 2v includes payment notes inscribed by a skilled hand from the 16th century, adding another layer of historical significance to this remarkable piece. With kind permission granted by both the Earl of Leicester and Trustees of Holkham Estate, we are privileged to appreciate and admire this exquisite example of Italian artistry from centuries past.
