Discovered in 1528 at Croix Rousse Hill in Lyon, France, this remarkable tablet is also known as the Tabula Claudiana. It bears an inscription of a speech delivered by Emperor Claudius to the Roman Senate, proposing that wealthy citizens from Gaul be granted entry into the Senatorial class and even the senate itself. The significance of this tablet lies not only in its historical value but also in its representation of gratitude from the Gallic elite towards Emperor Claudius. The Gallo-Roman province may have commissioned this metalwork as an expression of appreciation for his proposal.
