EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a detailed section of "The Lyon Tablet" an ancient bronze artifact dating back to 48 AD. Discovered in 1528 at Croix Rousse Hill in Lyon, France, this remarkable tablet is also known as the Tabula Claudiana. It bears an inscription of a speech delivered by Emperor Claudius to the Roman Senate, proposing that wealthy citizens from Gaul be granted entry into the Senatorial class and even the senate itself. The significance of this tablet lies not only in its historical value but also in its representation of gratitude from the Gallic elite towards Emperor Claudius. The Gallo-Roman province may have commissioned this metalwork as an expression of appreciation for his proposal. With intricate Latin inscriptions and fragments preserved over time, this fragmentary piece offers insights into provincial politics within the Roman Empire. Its existence serves as a testament to Lugdunum's (now Lyon) importance during that era. Displayed at Musee de la Civilisation Gallo-Romaine in Lyon, France, "The Lyon Tablet" stands as a tangible link to our past—a reminder of how political aspirations transcended borders and cultures even centuries ago. This photograph beautifully captures the essence and details of this significant archaeological find, inviting viewers to delve deeper into its historical context and appreciate its artistic craftsmanship.
