EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable collection of singing-bird boxes, crafted with exquisite enamel and silver-gilt by the Swiss School in the 19th century. The top right box, created by Charles Bruguier, features a rectangular design with receding lobed corners. Its sides and base are adorned with intricate engine-turned engravings of flowersprays and blank reserves. The cover is beautifully enamelled with a picturesque mountainous riverside landscape, surrounded by an enchanting scrolling border partly enamelled in blue. A slide on the front side opens the hinged oval flap, revealing another scenic view on one side and a delicate flowerspray on a pale blue ground on the other. This mechanism also brings to life a vibrantly plumed singing bird that rotates on its axis, flaps its wings, wags its tail, turns its head, and opens its beak. The lower right box bears the mark of Lamy and boasts similar craftsmanship. Its rectangular shape is embellished with engine-turned engravings of blank reserves, flowersprays, shells in the corners, stylised acanthus bands along bulging parts of the sides, and ribbon-twist bands. Opening this box reveals an enamelled scene depicting Lake Geneva with SalAve and Mont Blanc as well as an intricately designed birdspray on white ground inside. On the top left stands another masterpiece from Charles Bruguier's workshop featuring translucent blue basse-taille foliage within opaque blue borders set against two oblong vertical reserves chased with flowers on matted ground. The hinged oval flap displays yet another breathtaking lakeside view while releasing a colorfully plumed singing bird. Lastly, the lower left box showcases trophies of Music alongside floral engravings surrounding an eye-catching shaped reserve enamelled with flowersprays. Its hinged oval flap exhibits both exterior landscapes as well as interior turquoise-blue grounds adorned by beautiful birdsprays. These stunning singing-bird boxes are a testament to the exceptional artistry and craftsmanship of the
