EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the enchanting tale of "Phoebus and Daphne" or "Apollo e Dafne" as depicted in Luigi Ademollo's hand-coloured engraving from Ovid's Metamorphoses. The illustration, dating back to 1832 in Florence, takes us on a journey through Greek mythology. In this scene, we witness Phoebus Apollo, the son of Zeus and Leto, who is revered as the God of Music, Medicine, Prophecy, and the arts. Contrary to popular belief that he is also the sun god (Helios), Ovid portrays him as such in his work. Apollo's presence exudes power and grace as he pursues his love interest. Daphne enters the frame as a beautiful wood nymph yearning for a chaste life akin to Diana. As Apollo ardently chases after her affection, she seeks refuge by praying to her father Peneus—the river-god—for salvation. In response to her plea for protection from Apollo's advances, Peneus transforms Daphne into a laurel tree. Ademollo skillfully captures this pivotal moment with intricate details and vibrant colors that bring these mythological characters to life once again. This mesmerizing print serves not only as an artistic masterpiece but also as a reminder of ancient tales passed down through generations. Displayed within The Stapleton Collection and made available by Bridgeman Images' extensive archives, this image invites viewers to delve into classical mythology while appreciating Ademollo's talent for storytelling through visual artistry.
