Anne of Cleves, fourth wife and Queen of Henry VIII, (1825)

Anne of Cleves, fourth wife and Queen of Henry VIII, (1825). Henry VIII married Anne (1515-1557), a German Protestant princess, in 1540 for political reasons at the urging of his Chancellor, Thomas Cromwell. Hans Holbein painted a portrait of Anne for Henry who, finding her appearance on canvas to his liking, agreed to the marriage. In the flesh however, he found her considerably less attractive, and the marriage was annulled after only six months. From Memoirs of the Court of Queen Elizabeth, published in 1825

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the image of Anne of Cleves, the fourth wife and Queen of Henry VIII. Painted by Hans Holbein in 1825, this portrait was commissioned by Henry himself after being captivated by her appearance on canvas. However, upon meeting her in person, he found her considerably less attractive than expected. Anne of Cleves was a German Protestant princess who married Henry VIII in 1540 for political reasons at the urging of his Chancellor, Thomas Cromwell. This marriage lasted only six months before it was annulled due to their lack of compatibility. The portrait showcases Anne's regal beauty as she dons an exquisite dress adorned with intricate jewelry and a crown that signifies her status as queen consort. Her coat of arms proudly represents both her German heritage and her role within the British monarchy. Despite the short-lived nature of their union, Anne's presence in English history is significant. She played a crucial role during a time when religion and politics were deeply intertwined, representing Protestantism alongside King Henry VIII. This historical artifact from the 16th century provides us with a glimpse into the life and reign of one of England's most notorious monarchs. It serves as a reminder that appearances can be deceiving and that even powerful rulers like Henry VIII were not immune to human emotions such as attraction or disappointment.
