EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the Gentlemen XI cricket team as they prepare to face off against the Players at Lords Cricket Ground in London, 1899. The annual fixture between amateurs (the Gentlemen) and professionals (the Players) had been a long-standing tradition since its inception in 1806. In this particular match, the Gentlemen were led by none other than Dr WG Grace, who can be seen standing tall in the middle row, right at the center of attention. Dressed in their traditional cricket whites and sporting various headdresses such as hats and caps, these distinguished men exude an air of elegance and camaraderie. The image showcases a group portrait that epitomizes British sportsmanship during the Victorian era. Each player is meticulously positioned, creating a sense of unity within this talented team. From seated players to those standing behind them, their striped jackets and blazers add a touch of sophistication to their attire. As we delve into this snapshot from history, we are transported back to a time when cricket was not just a game but also a symbol of national pride. This print serves as both an homage to these remarkable sportsmen and a testament to the enduring legacy of gentlemen versus players matches. With WA Rouch's artistic eye capturing every detail with precision, this photograph has become an invaluable piece from "The Book of Cricket" edited by CB Fry. It stands as a reminder of an era when amateurism clashed with professionalism on the hallowed grounds of Lords Cricket Ground.
