Glaucus and Nydia, 1867. Creator: Lawrence Alma-Tadema (British, 1836-1912)
Glaucus and Nydia, 1867. " It was one of the few moments in her brief and troubled life that it was sweet to treasure." Weaving a rose garland as a present for her beloved master Glaucus, the blind servant Nydia resists speaking of her love for him. The scene is based on Sir Edward Bulwer-Lyttons enormously popular historical novel The Last Days of Pompeii (published in 1835), a melodramatic epic set in ancient Roman times, which culminates with the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Responding to the 19th-century appetite for things antique, the artist filled his historical scenes with depictions of Roman frescoes and statuary. Dutch by birth, Alma-Tadema made this picture in Brussels for a London art dealer. But the demand for such paintings became so great that he moved to England, where he achieved great financial and social success

Glaucus and Nydia, 1867
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that captures a poignant moment in the life of Nydia, a blind servant. In this scene inspired by Sir Edward Bulwer-Lytton's novel "The Last Days of Pompeii". Nydia weaves a delicate rose garland as a gift for her beloved master Glaucus. Despite harboring deep feelings for him, she resists speaking of her love. Lawrence Alma-Tadema, the British artist behind this masterpiece, was known for his historical scenes filled with Roman frescoes and statuary. Born in the Netherlands but later moving to England due to high demand for his paintings, Alma-Tadema achieved immense financial and social success. This particular painting showcases Alma-Tadema's skillful use of oil on wood panel to create intricate details and evoke emotions within the viewer. The soft lighting adds an ethereal quality to the scene while highlighting Nydia's devotion and inner turmoil. For Nydia, this fleeting moment represents one of the few sweet memories in her troubled life. As she delicately weaves each petal into place, she cherishes this precious time spent expressing her affection through artistry. It is a bittersweet reminder of unrequited love set against the backdrop of ancient Rome just before Mount Vesuvius' catastrophic eruption. Displayed at The Cleveland Museum of Art, this print from Heritage Images allows us to appreciate Lawrence Alma-Tadema's talent in capturing both historical accuracy and emotional depth in his work.
