EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the magnificent interior of Stationers Hall, located in the heart of the City of London. Captured around 1910 by artist Hedley Hilton, this image offers a glimpse into the grandeur and elegance of this historic building. Stationers Hall holds great significance as it is associated with The Worshipful Company of Stationers and Newspaper Makers, one of the esteemed Livery Companies in London. Established in 1403 and granted a Royal Charter in 1557, this company held a monopoly over the publishing industry for centuries until regulations were reformed in 1710. The photograph highlights intricate architectural features such as the ornate ceiling and detailed drawings adorning its walls. Its monochrome composition adds to its timeless appeal, transporting viewers back to early 20th century Britain. This remarkable piece is part of Sir Walter Besant's publication "London - The City" which was released by Adam & Charles Black in 1911. It serves as a testament to both British artistry and craftsmanship during that era.
