Landscape, late 18th-early 19th century. Creator: Totoki Baigai (Japanese, 1749-1804)
Landscape, late 18th-early 19th century. The Nanga, or " Southern School" painters of 17th- and 18th-century Japan were greatly influenced by Chinese culture. The subjects and styles of their work reflected the contemporary Japanese taste for imported Chinese objects and learning. A common practice among Nanga painters was the exchange of small paintings and calligraphies. They also celebrated special gatherings of artist-friends by producing individual sheets that were then gathered together in albums. The sheets shown here were part of such a gathering

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning landscape painting from the late 18th to early 19th century, created by Totoki Baigai, a renowned Japanese artist. The artwork belongs to the Nanga style, also known as the "Southern School" which was heavily influenced by Chinese culture during Japan's 17th and 18th centuries. The Nanga painters were deeply fascinated by imported Chinese objects and knowledge, resulting in their work reflecting contemporary Japanese preferences. One of their common practices was exchanging small paintings and calligraphies among themselves. They also celebrated special gatherings of artist-friends by creating individual sheets that would later be compiled into albums. These particular sheets featured in this print were part of such a gathering. Crafted during the Edo period (1615-1868), they are delicately painted with ink and light color on ivory silk. Each sheet tells its own unique story while harmoniously contributing to the collective beauty of the album. Preserved at The Cleveland Museum of Art, this masterpiece by Totoki Baigai exemplifies his exceptional talent and mastery over traditional Japanese painting techniques. Through this photograph, Heritage Art/Heritage Images allows us to appreciate Baigai's contribution to Japanese art history while providing us with a glimpse into an era where artistic exchange and camaraderie flourished among talented individuals like him.
