Medmenham Abbey near Henley on Thames, 1787. Artist: J Newton
Medmenham Abbey near Henley on Thames, 1787. A Cistercian abbey was founded in Medmenham in the 12th century under the ownership of Woburn Abbey. In 1547, at the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the abbey was seized and given to the Moore family and then sold privately to the Duffields. It was while in the possession of the Duffields that the abbey became infamous as the location of The Hellfire Club. [S. Hooper, 1787]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the haunting beauty of Medmenham Abbey near Henley on Thames in 1787. Once a Cistercian abbey founded in the 12th century, it fell into different hands over time. At the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1547, it was seized and given to the Moore family before being sold privately to the Duffields. It was during their ownership that this abbey gained notoriety as The Hellfire Club's meeting place. The photo showcases a cloudy day with nature surrounding this historical landmark. A majestic river flows gracefully beside it, reflecting both its grandeur and serenity. The towering trees stand as silent witnesses to centuries of religious devotion and scandalous secrets. The monochrome image adds an air of mystery and nostalgia, transporting us back to the 18th century when this engraving was created by J Newton under Samuel Hooper's supervision for The Print Collector publication. Medmenham Abbey stands as a testament to England's rich history, where religion intertwines with society's darker side. This print allows us to glimpse into a world where spirituality meets intrigue on the picturesque riverbank of Buckinghamshire.
