Page from a Panj Ganj of Abd al-Rahman Jami (Persian, 1414-1492)... 1603-1607. Creator
Page from a Panj Ganj of Abd al-Rahman Jami (Persian, 1414-1492), with two Persian masnavis: Yusuf va Zulaykha (Joseph and Zulaykha) and Khirad-nama-i Iskandari, 1603-1607. This section of text from Jamis poem of Joseph and Zulaykha, written diagonally in the margins, describes the beauties of Zulaykhas house, in which she intends to seduce Joseph. It includes the following verses: Jeweled lamps on the walls were hung; And odorous herbs were beneath them flung. She gathered together all things most fair, And unrolled the carpet of pleasure there. But amid the charms of the sumptuous hall She longed only for Joseph, far dearer than all. A heavenly palace is dark and dim To a lover whose darling is far from him. The longing of Zulaykha for Joseph metaphorically describes an imperfect devotees mystical love for God. With patience, forbearance, and virtuous actions, unification with the divine will eventually occur, even for the most flawed among us. On this page also begins the Khirad-nama-i Iskandari (Alexanders Book of Wisdom), another of the fivenarrative poems that make up the Panj Ganj

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a page from the Panj Ganj of Abd al-Rahman Jami, a renowned Persian poet from the 15th century. Created between 1603 and 1607, this particular page features two masnavis (narrative poems) titled Yusuf va Zulaykha (Joseph and Zulaykha) and Khirad-nama-i Iskandari. The highlighted section of text focuses on Jamis' poem of Joseph and Zulaykha, describing the alluring beauty of Zulaykha's house as she plans to seduce Joseph. The verses vividly depict jeweled lamps adorning the walls while fragrant herbs are scattered beneath them. In her pursuit of pleasure, she gathers together everything that is most exquisite and unfurls a carpet of temptation. However, amidst all these charms, her heart yearns solely for Joseph - his absence making even heavenly palaces seem dark and dim. Metaphorically speaking, Zulaykha's longing for Joseph symbolizes an imperfect devotee's mystical love for God. It conveys that through patience, forbearance, and virtuous actions, unification with the divine can be achieved by anyone – regardless of their flaws or imperfections. Additionally featured on this page is Khirad-nama-i Iskandari (Alexander's Book of Wisdom), one among five narrative poems comprising the Panj Ganj collection. This remarkable piece serves as a reminder that true enlightenment can be attained through wisdom and understanding. Presented by Heritage Art/Heritage Images, this print offers us a glimpse into the rich literary heritage of Persia while also conveying profound spiritual insights about love and devotion towards God.
