Portrait of Cardinal Guillaume Dubois, 1723. Creator: Hyacinthe Rigaud (French, 1659-1743)
Portrait of Cardinal Guillaume Dubois, 1723. With his luxurious, flamboyant dress--a voluminous wrap of scarlet silk topped by a short fur cape--the subject of Hyacinthe Rigauds portrait was clearly a man of consequence. Guillaume Dubois gained the favor of Louis XIV as tutor to his nephew, Philippe Charles, Duke of Orleans, and served as chief minister under Louiss successors, the regent Duke of Orleans and Louiss great-grandson, Louis XV. Dubois was appointed a Cardinal in the Catholic Church in 1721, a lofty aspiration at least partly motivated by political ambition: the title gave him the ability to remove political adversaries with impunity. Dubois holds a letter with the words Au Roy (to the king); this portrait was painted in the same year the young Louis XV ascended to the throne

EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait print by Hyacinthe Rigaud showcases the esteemed Cardinal Guillaume Dubois in all his grandeur. The flamboyant attire worn by Dubois, consisting of a scarlet silk wrap and a short fur cape, immediately conveys his status as a man of great importance. Dubois rose to prominence after gaining the favor of Louis XIV, serving as tutor to the Duke of Orleans and later becoming chief minister under both Louiss successors, including Louis XV. In 1721, he achieved another significant milestone when he was appointed as a Cardinal in the Catholic Church. This prestigious title not only elevated his religious standing but also provided him with political power to eliminate any adversaries without consequence. In this portrait, Dubois is depicted holding a letter inscribed with the words "Au Roy" (to the king), symbolizing his close relationship with royalty. Interestingly enough, this painting was created in 1723 - the same year that young Louis XV ascended to the throne. Hyacinthe Rigaud's masterful brushwork brings out every intricate detail of Cardinal Guillaume Dubois' regal presence. This remarkable piece now resides at The Cleveland Museum of Art and serves as an enduring testament to both French heritage and artistic excellence.
