Sunbeam Rapier car accident, Kilnhurst, South Yorkshire, 1964. Artist: Michael Walters

Sunbeam Rapier car accident, Kilnhurst, South Yorkshire, 1964. On the evening of 8th January 1964, Mrs Pat Walters skidded on ice and crashed through the barriers of a bridge in Kilnhurst. She was able to swim away from the convertable car to safety and the car was pulled out of the canal the next day. After enquiring about her health, Mr Victor Waddington, who owned the boat yard in nearby Swinton, informed Mrs Walters that if she would like to keep her car out of his canal, he would try to keep his barges off her roads

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment frozen in time - the aftermath of a Sunbeam Rapier car accident that occurred in Kilnhurst, South Yorkshire, in 1964. The artist behind this powerful image is Michael Walters. On the fateful evening of January 8th, Mrs Pat Walters found herself skidding on treacherous ice, crashing through the barriers of a bridge and plunging into the canal below. Miraculously, she managed to swim to safety while her convertible car sank beneath the water's surface. The following day, with great effort and determination, the damaged vehicle was successfully retrieved from its watery resting place. In an unexpected twist of fate, Mr Victor Waddington - owner of a nearby boat yard in Swinton - approached Mrs Walters with an offer. Concerned about keeping his barges off her roads and preventing any further mishaps, he proposed helping her safeguard her beloved car from future accidents. This photograph not only documents an unfortunate incident but also highlights the resilience and kindness displayed by individuals during times of misfortune. It serves as a reminder that even amidst adversity, there are those who extend their support to others without hesitation. Michael Walters' monochromatic portrayal beautifully encapsulates this slice of history from 1960s Britain – showcasing both the destructive power of accidents and humanity's capacity for compassion.
