Wolseley hydroplane, 1912. Creator: Kirk & Sons of Cowes

Wolseley hydroplane, 1912. The Wolseley Motors company, a British motor vehicle manufacturer founded in early 1901 by Vickers, also built marine power-units for a variety of watercraft. At first engines for launches were made in partnership with the well-known manufacturers, the Teddington Launch Works, to supply the launches. Demand for marine engines grew and Wolseley also designed and manufactured engines for hydroplanes, cruisers, passenger ferries and lifeboats. Many of the larger vessels were built by S. E. Saunders Ltd. at Cowes, Isle-of-Wight. The 120-hp V8 units for hydroplanes were of very advanced design, where weight was critical, and so required considerable development work

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Wolseley hydroplane, a remarkable creation by Kirk & Sons of Cowes in 1912. The Wolseley Motors company, renowned for its British motor vehicles, extended its expertise to marine power-units for various watercraft. Initially collaborating with Teddington Launch Works to supply engines for launches, the demand for marine engines grew rapidly. As a result, Wolseley ventured into designing and manufacturing engines not only for launches but also hydroplanes, cruisers, passenger ferries, and lifeboats. The advanced design of the 120-hp V8 units specifically tailored for hydroplanes was crucial due to weight limitations. This necessitated extensive development work by William Umpleby Kirk and Edgar WP Kirk of Kirk & Sons of Cowes. Many larger vessels utilizing these cutting-edge engines were constructed by S. E. Saunders Ltd. , located at Cowes on the Isle-of-Wight. Captured in this photograph is the starboard bow view of the sleek Wolseley hydroplane as it gracefully glides through The Solent waters off England's coast. Its streamlined hull exudes elegance while showcasing the fusion between automotive engineering and nautical prowess. This image serves as a testament to both technological innovation and craftsmanship during the early 20th century. It symbolizes an era when transportation boundaries were pushed beyond roads onto vast bodies of water – where speed became paramount in achieving new feats on both land and sea.
