Wolseley motor launch, 1911. Creator: Kirk & Sons of Cowes

Wolseley motor launch, 1911. The Wolseley Motors company, a British motor vehicle manufacturer founded in early 1901 by Vickers, also built marine power-units for a variety of watercraft. At first engines for launches were made in partnership with the well-known manufacturers, the Teddington Launch Works, to supply the launches. Demand for marine engines grew and Wolseley also designed and manufactured engines for hydroplanes, cruisers, passenger ferries and lifeboats. Many of the larger vessels were built by S. E. Saunders Ltd. at Cowes, Isle-of-Wight

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Wolseley motor launch, a remarkable creation by Kirk & Sons of Cowes in 1911. The Wolseley Motors company, established in the early 1900s by Vickers, was renowned for its British motor vehicles. However, their expertise extended beyond land-based transportation as they also delved into building marine power-units for various watercraft. Originally partnering with Teddington Launch Works to supply engines for launches, Wolseley soon witnessed a surge in demand for marine engines. This prompted them to design and manufacture engines not only for launches but also hydroplanes, cruisers, passenger ferries, and lifeboats. Notably, S. E. Saunders Ltd. , based in Cowes on the Isle of Wight, played a significant role in constructing many larger vessels. The photograph captures the elegance of this motor launch as it gracefully glides through the waters of The Solent off the coast of England. Its sleek hull and powerful engine symbolize both innovation and luxury during that era. Arthur Henry Kirk and Edgar WP Kirk are credited with capturing this momentous image that portrays not just a boat but an embodiment of progress in road transport merging seamlessly with water transport. With William Umpleby Kirk's involvement as well, this masterpiece represents collaboration at its finest. As we admire this monochrome snapshot from the early 20th century, let us appreciate how Wolseley Motors' ingenuity transcended boundaries between different modes of transportation while leaving an indelible mark on history.
