EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored lithograph showcases a group of Chukchi hunters in their traditional attire, skillfully engaging in their ancient hunting practices in the harsh Siberian winter landscape. The Chukchi people, indigenous to the Chukotka Peninsula in the Russian Far East, have been known for their nomadic lifestyle and strong hunting culture for centuries. In this image, the hunters are depicted with their essential tools: bows and arrows, spears, and snowshoes. The bows, made from wood and sinew, are strung with animal gut and intricately decorated with bone and feathers. Arrows, tipped with sharp flint or bone, are carefully placed in quivers made from animal hides. Spears, crafted from bone or metal, are used for close-range encounters with prey. The Chukchi hunters' loyal hunting dogs, an essential part of their hunting team, are seen in the foreground. These powerful and agile dogs, often described as Spitz breeds, were bred specifically for their ability to pull sleds and track prey in the snow. Their keen sense of smell and endurance made them invaluable hunting companions. The hunters' tent, made from reindeer hides and supported by wooden poles, is visible in the background. The tent, known as a 'chum,' is easily transported and provides shelter from the harsh elements. The Chukchi people's connection to nature and their reliance on hunting for survival are beautifully encapsulated in this striking image from Friedrich Wilhelm Goedsche's Complete Gallery of Peoples in True Pictures, published in Meissen, circa 1835-1840.
