EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, taken in Belgrade on October 22, 1923, we find a gathering of European royalty during the wedding celebrations of Prince Paul of Serbia and Princess Olga of Greece. From left to right, in the front row, we see Her Grace The Duchess of York, later Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother (1900-2002), His Royal Highness Crown Prince Carol of Romania, later King Carol II (1893-1953), and His Royal Highness Prince Albert, Duke of York, later King George VI (1895-1952). The Duchess of York is wearing a beautiful white dress and a feathered hat, while the other royals are dressed formally in their military uniforms. Behind them, we see Crown Princess Ileana of Romania, the sister of Crown Prince Carol, holding a bouquet of flowers. The wedding ceremony took place in the Church of Saint Sava, and the royal guests also attended the christening of Prince Peter of Yugoslavia, which took place a few days earlier. The Duke of York acted as godfather and famously rescued the baby when the Patriarch accidentally dropped him in the font. This photograph captures a moment of joy and camaraderie among European royals during a time of celebration. The image is a testament to the close relationships between the various European royal families and their shared history. The photograph is dated 1923 and is part of the extensive collection of historical images available from Mary Evans Prints Online.
