EDITORS COMMENTS
In this close-up photograph, the intricate anatomy of a northern right whale's (Eubalaena glacialis) flipper is showcased in the Mammal Gallery at The Natural History Museum in London. The northern right whale, also known as the black right whale, is a large baleen whale belonging to the family Balaenidae and the order Cetacea. This particular specimen, displayed laterally, offers a unique perspective on the complex structure of this magnificent marine mammal. The northern right whale is a critically endangered species, with an estimated population of around 400 individuals. They are named for their preference for being in shallow, right-angled waters, making them an easy target for whalers in the past. This, coupled with other threats such as ship strikes and entanglement in fishing gear, has led to their population decline. The flipper of the northern right whale is a large, paddle-like appendage that measures up to 3 meters (10 feet) in length. It is used for propulsion and maneuvering in the water. In this photograph, the bony structure of the flipper is revealed, with the large, flat bones forming the base and the smaller, curved bones of the digits visible towards the tip. The baleen plates, used for filter feeding, are not visible in this image, but are a defining feature of this species and other baleen whales. The northern right whale's skeletal anatomy is a testament to the incredible adaptations that have allowed it to thrive in the marine environment. This exhibit at The Natural History Museum serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving these magnificent creatures and their habitats.
