1. Title: "Heinrich Wilhelm Freytag: A German Military Commander in the War with France" Heinrich Wilhelm Freytag (1720-1798) was a prominent German military commander who played a significant role in the wars against France during the late 18th century. Born in the Duchy of Saxe-Weimar, Freytag began his military career in the Saxon army, eventually rising to the rank of Major General. During the Seven Years' War (1756-1763), Freytag distinguished himself in several battles, including the Battle of Rossbach in 1757, where he commanded the Saxon cavalry and helped secure a decisive victory for the Allied forces against the French and their Bavarian allies. In the following decades, Freytag continued to serve in various military capacities, including as the commander of the Saxon contingent in the Prussian army during the War of the Bavarian Succession (1778-1779). However, his most notable achievement came during the War of the First Coalition (1792-1797), where he commanded the Saxon forces in the Battle of Jemappes in 1792. Despite being outnumbered and outmaneuvered by the French army under the command of the Duke of Bouillon, Freytag managed to hold his ground and prevent a complete rout of the Saxon forces. Despite his military successes, Freytag's career was not without controversy. In 1785, he was dismissed from the Saxon army after being implicated in a plot against the Elector of Saxony. However, he was later reinstated in 1790, and continued to serve until his retirement in 1793. This photograph print captures the image of a determined and resolute Freytag, dressed in his military uniform, with a stern expression on his face. The background features a map of Europe with various battle sites marked, highlighting his role in the wars against France. Freytag's legacy as a military commander who held his ground against the French forces continues to be celebrated in German military history.
