1653 1698 Alexandre Chabot Dame Jeanne Melun Rohan

EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite portrait captures Janne Pelagie Chabot de Rohan, Dame de Montlieu, in the prime of her beauty and elegance. Born in 1653, Janne was the second wife of Alexandre, Prince de Melun, a prominent figure in French nobility during the late 17th century. The painting, created around 1680, showcases Janne's refined sophistication and charm. Janne Pelagie Chabot was the daughter of Jean II de Chabot, Marquis de Jarnac, and Catherine de Vivonne. Her first marriage was to Jean-Baptiste de Duras, Marquis de Hautefort, with whom she had three children. Following his death, she married Alexandre, Prince de Melun in 1682. The union brought her into the powerful and influential House of Rohan. Alexandre, Prince de Melun, was a military leader and a favorite of King Louis XIV. He was known for his extravagant lifestyle and his numerous mistresses, but Janne remained his devoted wife until his death in 1691. She continued to serve as a courtier and a patron of the arts until her own passing in 1698. This portrait is a testament to the beauty and grace of Janne Pelagie Chabot de Rohan, Dame de Montlieu. Her poised expression, elegant attire, and the delicate details of her headdress all contribute to the painting's captivating allure. The portrait not only showcases the subject's physical beauty but also her inner strength and resilience, making it an invaluable piece of historical art and an enduring symbol of the French nobility during the late 17th century.
