EDITORS COMMENTS
"John Pascoe Fawkner: Pioneering Spirit in Early Australian Settlement (1792-1869) This evocative portrait captures the determined visage of John Pascoe Fawkner, an English-born pioneer who played a pivotal role in the early history of Australia. Born in 1792, Fawkner arrived in Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania) in 1803 as a convict, serving a seven-year sentence for forging a bill of exchange. However, his spirit of adventure and entrepreneurship soon emerged. In 1835, Fawkner became the first European settler in what is now Melbourne, Australia. He established a farm on the Yarra River, which he named 'Garden Town,' and began trading with the local Aboriginal community. Fawkner's pioneering spirit extended beyond his personal endeavors. He advocated for the rights of the Aboriginal people, believing that they should be treated as equals and respected for their knowledge of the land. Despite facing numerous challenges, including financial difficulties and conflicts with the local Aboriginal community, Fawkner persevered. He continued to explore and settle new areas, establishing the town of Williamstown in 1837 and playing a significant role in the development of Melbourne. This portrait, taken in later life, reflects the wisdom and experience of a man who had lived through the early days of Australian settlement. Fawkner's pioneering spirit, entrepreneurial acumen, and commitment to social justice continue to inspire Australians today. This image is a poignant reminder of the courage and determination of the early settlers who shaped the course of Australian history." [Mary Evans Picture Library/Bridgeman Images]
