EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely detailed hand-colored copperplate engraving, titled "Dark Dagger, Acronicta tridens (Klootdrager, Acronicta tridens): Bastard Wasps on an Apple Branch, Malus domestica," was created by the renowned Dutch naturalist and artist, Jacob L. Admiral, for the second edition of his seminal work, "Naauwkeurige Waarneemingen omtrent de veranderingen van veele Insekten" (Accurate Descriptions of the Metamorphoses of Insects), published by J. Sluyter in Amsterdam in 1774. The engraving depicts the Dark Dagger Moth, Acronicta tridens, a striking nocturnal insect with distinctive markings, perched on an apple branch. The moth's caterpillar and pupa can be seen on the branch as well, along with several bastard wasps, which are parasitic wasps that lay their eggs on the moth's larvae. The intricate details of the moth's wings, the textures of the apple bark, and the precise rendition of the wasps' anatomy are all testament to Admiral's masterful skill as an artist and naturalist. For this second edition, the work was expanded to include eight additional plates, bringing the total number of engravings to 33. The meticulous accuracy and beauty of these engravings have made them invaluable resources for entomologists and natural historians for over two centuries. This particular image offers a fascinating glimpse into the complex relationship between the Dark Dagger Moth and its parasitic wasps, highlighting the intricacies of the natural world and the importance of careful observation and documentation.
