EDITORS COMMENTS
Empress Shoken, born Princess Teru Kōjō, was the consort of Emperor Meiji and the empress consort of Japan from 1867 until her death in 1914. This vintage photograph, likely taken in the late 1880s, 1890s, or early 1900s, offers a glimpse into the life of this influential figure during the Meiji Era (1868-1912). Empress Shoken was a native of the Satsuma Domain in southern Japan and was chosen as the Emperor's consort following a series of political maneuvers that aimed to strengthen the imperial lineage. Her marriage to Emperor Meiji was a strategic move to unite the imperial family with the powerful Satsuma clan. In this ethnographic portrait, Empress Shoken is depicted wearing traditional Japanese attire, including a kimono and obi, adorned with intricate patterns and vibrant colors. Her elegant posture and serene expression convey a sense of regal dignity and grace. The photograph's albumen process and muted tones add to its antique charm, transporting us back in time to the 19th century. As a traveler in her own right, Empress Shoken was known for her interest in various aspects of Japanese culture and her efforts to promote traditional arts and crafts. This photograph serves as a testament to her enduring legacy and the rich cultural heritage of Japan during the Meiji Era. This archival print is an invaluable resource for scholars, historians, and anyone interested in the history and ethnography of Japan during this period. Its preservation in an album or collection adds to its historical significance and makes it a cherished keepsake for generations to come.
