EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Eros Royal Engineers Memorial in Tierceville, Normandy, a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the 179th Special Field Company during the D-Day landings of World War II on 6 June 1944. The life-size figure of an Eros, the Greek god of love, was created by the 179th Special Field Company and completed on 23 August 1944, as a tribute to the fallen soldiers. However, during one particularly heavy frost, the figure lost a leg, a tragic reminder of the harsh conditions endured by the Allied forces during the war. Despite the damage, the figure was not forgotten. Former members of the French Resistance and the Comite du Debarquement, a local committee responsible for the organization of the D-Day landings, came together to restore the memorial in 1971. Their efforts ensured that the figure was once again whole, standing proudly as a testament to the enduring bond between the Allied forces and the people of Normandy. The Eros Royal Engineers Memorial is a powerful symbol of the sacrifices made during the D-Day landings and the enduring friendship between the Allied forces and the people of Normandy. This photograph, taken by Holts from Mary Evans Prints Online, captures the essence of this poignant memorial and the history it represents.
