EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured lithograph, taken from John O. Westwood's new edition of Dru Drury's Illustrations of Exotic Entomology, published by Bohn in London in 1837, showcases two intriguing insects of the Coleoptera order: the Hercules beetle (Dynastes hercules) and the Sculptured pine borer (Chalcophora virginiensis). The Hercules beetle, depicted in this image as a male (Male 1) and a female (Female 2), is the largest and most famous beetle species in the world. With an impressive size of up to 17 centimeters, the Hercules beetle is named after the ancient Greek mythological hero Hercules due to its impressive horns, which are used for mating displays and defense. The female, in contrast, is smaller and lacks the prominent horns. The Sculptured pine borer (Chalcophora virginiensis), shown in the image as number 3, is a small, elegant beetle with a distinctive sculptured appearance. This beetle is known for its bright, metallic green and blue exoskeleton, which provides excellent camouflage among pine needles. The Sculptured pine borer is a significant pest of pine trees, as the larvae feed on the inner bark, causing damage to the tree. The intricate details and vibrant colors in this lithograph are a testament to the exceptional skill of the artist and the advanced techniques of the time. This beautiful piece of entomological art not only showcases the natural history of these fascinating insects but also highlights the artistic and scientific achievements of the 19th century.
