EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Plee Jr. after an original illustration by Jean-Gabriel Pretre, showcases two fascinating deep-sea fish species: the Spotted Burrfish (Chilomycterus reticulatus) and the Long-spine Porcupinefish (Diodon holocanthus). The engraving, taken from Bernard Germain de Lacepede's Natural History of Oviparous Quadrupeds, Snakes, Fish and Cetaceans published in Paris in 1825, offers a detailed and intricate representation of these underwater dwellers. The Spotted Burrfish, also known as the Atringa or the Reticulate Burrfish, is depicted in the foreground of the image. With its distinctive, mottled brown and white spots, this fish is well-camouflaged against the rocky seafloor. Its most notable feature, however, is the sharp, venomous spines that line its body, which it can puff out to deter predators. In the background, the Long-spine Porcupinefish, also known as the Holocanth or the Holocanthus, is shown with its distinctive, elongated spines. These spines, which can be inflated to make the fish appear larger and more intimidating, are covered in a venom that can cause intense pain and paralysis. The Long-spine Porcupinefish is a master of disguise, able to change color and texture to blend in with its surroundings. This engraving not only showcases the beauty and intricacy of these deep-sea creatures but also highlights the skill and artistry of the engraver and the illustrator. It is a testament to the natural history of our oceans and the importance of documenting the diverse and fascinating species that inhabit them.
