EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored woodblock engraving showcases three intriguing plants: the Villous Deadly Carrot (Thapsia villosa), Giant Fennel (Ferula communis), and Thapsia, a herb with fennel-like leaves (Thapsia villosa). Originally illustrated in Adam Lonicer's Krauterbuch, or Herbal, published in Frankfurt in 1557, this botanical masterpiece is a testament to the meticulous detail and artistic skill of the time. The Villous Deadly Carrot, also known as the Deadly Narcissus or the False Hemlock, is a poisonous plant with a distinctive appearance. Its villous, or hairy, leaves and umbels of white flowers resemble those of a carrot, but its toxic properties set it apart. The plant was used in ancient Greece and Rome as a pesticide and a component in funeral rites, but its ingestion could lead to fatal consequences. Giant Fennel, or Common Ferula, is a tall, aromatic herb with feathery leaves and yellow flowers. It belongs to the carrot family and is native to the Mediterranean region. The plant was used in traditional medicine for various ailments, including digestive issues and respiratory problems. Thapsia, also known as the Ransom Root or the Herb of Hercules, is a perennial herb with fennel-like leaves and yellow umbels of flowers. It was believed to have medicinal properties, particularly in treating snakebites and scorpion stings. The plant's name is derived from the Greek word 'thapsis,' meaning 'to save,' reflecting its traditional use as an antidote. This pirate edition or atlas of illustrations only from the 17th century features captions in Latin, Greek, French, Italian, German, and English manuscripts, showcasing the global reach and impact of botanical knowledge during this period. The intricate woodblock engraving process, which involved carving the design into a block of wood and transferring it to paper using ink, resulted in stunningly detailed and accurate representations of these fascinating plants.
