EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in the year 1890, offers a rare glimpse into the traditional manufacture of Glenlivet Scotch Whisky during the Victorian era. The image, produced by Andrew Usher & Co in Edinburgh, showcases the intricate process of condensing spirit vapour in worm tubs. During the distillation process, the newly-made spirit, or "wash," is heated in copper stills. The resulting vapour rises into the condenser, where it comes into contact with cold water, causing it to condense back into a liquid form. This liquid, now a clear and lighter version of the original wash, is collected in the receiving tubs, which can be seen in the foreground of the photograph. The remaining vapour continues to rise and passes through the series of worm tubs, where it comes into contact with more cold water, cooling and condensing it further. The resulting liquid, now a rich and complex spirit, is collected at the bottom of the tubs and is used as the foundation for the Glenlivet Scotch Whisky. The 19th century was a period of significant growth for the Scotch Whisky industry in Britain, with many distilleries, including Glenlivet, expanding to meet the increasing demand for this popular drink. The meticulous process of distillation, as depicted in this photograph, played a crucial role in the production of high-quality Scotch Whisky that continues to be enjoyed around the world today.
