EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the moment of honor and valor as Lieutenant William Leefe Robinson, a brave aviator of the Royal Flying Corps during World War I, proudly wears his newly-awarded Victoria Cross. The Victoria Cross is the highest military decoration awarded for valor in the face of the enemy to the British and Commonwealth forces. Lieutenant Leefe Robinson earned this prestigious award on the night of 2nd/3rd September 1916, over the skies of Cuffley, Hertfordshire, England. The scene depicted in the image shows him standing in front of a table adorned with the Victoria Cross wreath and other decorations. The Victoria Cross medal, with its distinctive Maltese cross design, is prominently displayed on his left chest, pinned to his uniform. Robinson's gallantry came during a period when the German Zeppelin or airship threat loomed large over the United Kingdom. In the early hours of the morning, he engaged the German Schutte-Lanz SL 11 airship, under heavy enemy fire, and managed to bring it down. This marked the first successful engagement of an enemy airship by the Royal Flying Corps. Notably, Lieutenant Leefe Robinson was not a newcomer to combat. He had already been in the air for two hours before this encounter and had previously attacked another airship earlier in his sortie. His unwavering courage and determination in the face of adversity made him a true hero of the Great War.
