EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Convair F-106A Delta Dart, serial number O-70237 (msn 8-24-26), of the United States Air Force, during its tenure at the Air Force Flight Test Center (AFFTC) at Edwards Air Force Base in California, circa 1965. The F-106A Delta Dart, a single-engine, all-weather tactical fighter interceptor, was manufactured by Convair in August 1958. In this image, the Delta Dart undergoes an upgrade, with the integration of the Instrument Display Group (IDG) conversion, number 24, which was implemented in April 1961. The 318th Fighter Interceptor Squadron, part of the 325th Wing, was based at McChord Air Force Base in Washington, where this aircraft likely saw active service. Tragically, on October 5, 1962, while stationed at Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota, O-70237 crashed into the ocean off the coast of Point Loma, California. The cause of the accident remains undisclosed. The Convair F-106A Delta Dart, also known as the Fisher Interceptor or simply the Delta Dart, was a significant aircraft in the history of aviation. Its sleek design and advanced capabilities made it a formidable force in the skies, contributing to the United States' air defense during the Cold War era. This photograph is a testament to the rich history of military aviation and the remarkable machines that have shaped it.
