EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases two Nord 1002 Pingouin II aircraft, G-ATBG and G-ASTG, parked side by side at Elstree Airfield during the 1950s-1960s. The Nord 1000 family, represented here by the Pingouin II variants, was the post-World War II production of the Messerschmitt Bf 108. After the occupation of France, production was transferred to SNCAN (Société Nationale de Constructions Aéronautiques du Nord). Initially, the new aircraft relied on remaining wartime components and engines. When stocks of these components ran out, new airframe components were produced domestically, and locally sourced engines were fitted. The Nord 1001 Pingouin I was the Renault 6Q-11 powered variant, while the Nord 1002 Pingouin II was the Renault 6Q-10 powered variant. This image offers a glimpse into the aeronautical history of the French-built Bf 108, which was an essential part of the European aviation landscape during the post-war era. The Nord 1000 family played a significant role in the transportation sector, providing reliable and versatile aircraft for various applications.
