1956 Hobson Minister Profumo Valerie Aeronautics Miss Watkinson

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this elegant image from the 1956 Royal Aeronautical Society Garden Party at Wisley, two striking women, both dressed in summer hats and dresses, engage in conversation. The woman on the left is none other than Valerie Hobson, wife of the British politician John Profumo. Profumo, who served as Secretary of State for War from 1960 to 1961, would later become infamous for his involvement in the Profumo Affair, a political scandal that rocked the British government. At the time of this photograph, however, Profumo's public image was still untarnished, and he and his wife were a popular presence at social events. Hobson's refined beauty and poised demeanor are on full display in this image, as she chats animatedly with the other woman, who is identified as Mrs. Watkinson. Mrs. Watkinson was the wife of the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, and her presence at the aeronautical society event would have been fitting, given her husband's role in the transportation industry. The backdrop of the photograph is a beautiful English garden, filled with vibrant flowers and lush greenery. In the distance, planes can be seen taking off or landing at Wisley Airfield, a reminder of the technological marvels of the age of aviation. The image captures a moment of casual elegance and sophistication, as two stylish women enjoy a sunny afternoon amidst the excitement of the Royal Aeronautical Society Garden Party.
