25th Beaches Cape Dardanelles Gallipoli Helles Landing Peninsula Wreck Wrecked
EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the desolate scene at V Beach, Cape Helles, Gallipoli, Turkey, in 1923. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the tragic events that unfolded here on 25th April 1915, during the First World War. The Gallipoli campaign, also known as the Dardanelles Campaign, was an attempt by the Allied forces, consisting mainly of British and French troops, to secure a sea route to Russia through the Dardanelles and the Bosphorus. The invasion of the Gallipoli peninsula was initiated with an amphibious landing at five beaches, with V Beach at Cape Helles being one of the main landing sites. However, the landing at V Beach was mismanaged, resulting in a bloody and chaotic scene. The meagre defences held by the Ottoman forces were underestimated, and the British commander, Major General Aylmer Hunter-Weston, failed to coordinate an effective assault. The result was a devastating loss for the Allied forces, with thousands of soldiers killed, wounded, or missing in action. The wreckage of ships that can be seen in the photograph is a testament to the fierce battle that took place in these waters. The remains of the vessels serve as a haunting reminder of the cost of war and the sacrifices made by the brave men who fought on this fateful day. This photograph, taken three years after the event, offers a glimpse into the aftermath of the Gallipoli campaign, a campaign that would come to be remembered as one of the greatest military disasters in history.
