MCC Tour of South Africa from October 1964 to February 1965
MCC Tour of South Africa from October 1964 to February 1965.
Ken Barrington with dog in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe before the match against Matabeland at Queens Sports Club, Bulawayo on 21st, 22nd October 1964.
The tourists were captained by Michael John Knight Smith who had taken Warwickshire near to the top of the county championship.
Cricket fans gave him little chance of returning towards the end of February with the rubber, for the bowling available to him looked decidedly limited in terms of a touring side and South Africa had performed well in Australia.
Yet Smith and his men achieved what Peter Mays 1956-57 side failed to do and into the bargain went through their entire programme of 19 matches undefeated

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment of pure joy and camaraderie during the MCC Tour of South Africa from October 1964 to February 1965. In the heartwarming image, Ken Barrington, one of England's finest cricketers, is seen with his loyal canine companion in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe before a match against Matabeland at Queens Sports Club. Led by the talented captain Michael John Knight Smith, who had already achieved great success with Warwickshire in the county championship, this touring team faced skepticism from cricket fans. The bowling options seemed limited compared to their formidable opponents - South Africa had recently performed exceptionally well in Australia. However, against all odds and expectations, Smith and his men accomplished what Peter Mays' side failed to do back in 1956-57. Remarkably, they went undefeated throughout their entire program of 19 matches. This remarkable feat solidified their place in history as an exceptional touring side. The photo itself exudes warmth and happiness as Barrington smiles confidently while donning his blazer. It serves as a testament not only to the skill and determination of these players but also to the bond they shared both on and off the field. Preserved through time by Mirrorpix's Memory Lane Prints collection, this snapshot offers a glimpse into a golden era of cricketing excellence that continues to inspire sports enthusiasts today.
