Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor speaking at The Oxford University Dramatic Society
Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor speaking at The Oxford University Dramatic Society. Oxford, England, 8th February 1966
In early 1966, the Burtons appeared onstage together in nine performances of Christopher Marlowes Doctor Faustus at the Oxford University Dramatic Society. The Burtons agreed to do the play without pay, alongside undergraduates, in order to raise money for the Oxford University Theatre Appeal Fund. It was also in honour of Richards former professor, Nevill Coghill, the man who gave him his start in the theatre. Coghill was set to direct the play in his final year at Oxford. " Since he started me off I think I should finish him off, " cracked Burton.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic couple, Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, as they speak at The Oxford University Dramatic Society in Oxford, England on February 8th, 1966. In a remarkable display of generosity and admiration for their former professor Nevill Coghill, the Burtons took to the stage alongside undergraduates in a production of Christopher Marlowe's Doctor Faustus. Despite being renowned actors themselves, they agreed to perform without pay in order to raise funds for the Oxford University Theatre Appeal Fund. The picture not only showcases the star power of Burton and Taylor but also highlights their deep-rooted connection to academia and appreciation for those who helped shape their careers. With his characteristic wit, Burton humorously remarked that since Professor Coghill was instrumental in launching his theatrical journey, he felt obliged to "finish him off" by participating in this special production. In this snapshot from the swinging sixties, we witness two legendary figures gracing the stage with their presence while supporting a noble cause. Their involvement undoubtedly added an extra layer of glamour and excitement to an already highly anticipated event. This photograph serves as a timeless reminder of Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor's enduring legacy within both the entertainment industry and academic circles alike.
