"Full"The conductor or conductress would either have to be a trapeze

" Full"
The conductor or conductress would either have to be a trapeze artist or a genius to devise a means of collecting fares on this tram. There are many trams like this during the rush hour, when workers leave the factory at the end of the shift. Both trams and buses are packed to the doors and even crowded on the outside, with passengers clinging on with everything except their teeth. Every night the same scene is enacted quite a number of times in the Scotswood Road, Newcastle. Hanging on to every part of the vehicle, they do a journey of about a mile, and the well worn phrase, " Is your journey really necessary" seems to have greater significance when you see things like this. 14th May 1944
Note on reverse. This picture was not stunted, it was taken while the tram was at speed

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled ""Full"" takes us back to the bustling streets of Newcastle during World War II. The image captures a tram packed to its absolute limit with weary workers, all desperate to make their way home after a long day at the factory. It is a scene that repeats itself every night along Scotswood Road, as trams and buses become overcrowded both inside and out. The conductor or conductress on this particular tram must possess extraordinary skills akin to those of a trapeze artist or genius. Collecting fares in such chaotic conditions would require nimble acrobatics or an ingenious method yet unknown. As passengers cling onto every available space, holding tight for dear life, they embark on a mile-long journey where even asking oneself if it is truly necessary becomes more poignant. Taken in May 1944, during the height of war and conflict, this photograph serves as a powerful reminder of the challenges faced by ordinary people during those turbulent times. The resilience and determination exhibited by these commuters reflect the indomitable spirit that prevailed throughout England's home front. Preserved through time, this snapshot from Memory Lane Prints not only showcases historical transportation but also offers us glimpses into daily life amidst adversity. It encapsulates an era when Binns department store was prominent in Newcastle's retail landscape while providing valuable insights into the struggles faced by workers during World War II.
