Members of the Paignton Pig Swill group. During the Second World War the public were encouraged to supplement meagre food rations by, among other things, keeping pigs. The Small Pig Keeper Council (SPKC) was the national governing body responsible for promoting the keeping of pigs, providing advice and guidance, and supporting the setting up of Pig Clubs around England and Wales. This meant not only paper and metal had to be salvaged but food swill to feed animals, such as pigs, as well. This would help meat rationing.

EDITORS COMMENTS
Members of the Paignton Pig Swill group gather together during the Second World War, showcasing their dedication to supplementing meager food rations. In an effort to alleviate the strain on resources, the public was encouraged to keep pigs as a means of providing additional sustenance. The Small Pig Keeper Council (SPKC), acting as the national governing body, played a crucial role in promoting pig keeping and offering guidance and support. This photo captures a moment frozen in time on 11th December 1940, illustrating the resilience and resourcefulness of these farmers. With determination etched across their faces, these men understood that every contribution mattered in times of war and conflict. As they stand proudly alongside their porcine companions, it is evident that not only paper and metal were salvaged but also food swill – scraps unfit for human consumption yet perfect for feeding animals like pigs. By utilizing this valuable resource, meat rationing could be eased slightly while ensuring that no precious morsel went to waste. This image serves as a poignant reminder of how communities came together during challenging times; united by a common goal - supporting one another through self-sufficiency initiatives. It stands as a testament to the indomitable spirit displayed by ordinary individuals who made extraordinary efforts towards securing sustenance amidst adversity.
