Webley & Scott, gun makers in Birmingham, West Midlands

Webley & Scott, gun makers in Birmingham, West Midlands. Their original premises was in Weaman Street, Birmingham, until they moved to a modern factory in West Bromwich in 1958. As Birmingham is synonymous with the gun trade they were reluctant to move out of the city, so a special gate and entrance was constructed within the city boundary so that the postal address is still in Birmingham. Pictured, Reuben Edkins, age 64, of Sparkhill, who for 31 years has been the shooting range supervisor and every firearm manufactured by the firm is tested by him. 27th September 1967

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the heart of Birmingham's gun trade in the 1960s. Webley & Scott, esteemed gun makers, were renowned for their craftsmanship and precision. Originally located on Weaman Street, they eventually moved to a modern factory in West Bromwich in 1958. However, their strong connection to Birmingham led them to construct a special gate and entrance within the city boundary so that their postal address remained within its limits. In this snapshot frozen in time, we meet Reuben Edkins, an experienced shooting range supervisor at the age of 64. For an impressive span of 31 years, he has been entrusted with testing every firearm manufactured by Webley & Scott. His expertise and dedication shine through as he meticulously examines each piece before it leaves the factory. The image transports us into an era when Birmingham was booming with industrial prowess. The city's rich history as a hub for manufacturing is evident here as we witness one of its iconic industries thriving. This photograph serves as a testament not only to Webley & Scott's legacy but also to the skilled workers like Reuben who played an integral role in upholding their reputation for excellence. Bill Ellman's lens captures both the pride and responsibility carried by those involved in this specialized craft during a significant moment in time – September 27th, 1967.
