British prepare for the big push into Germany. (In what would be the final few weeks of World War Two in Europe).
Up and down the banks of the Rhine, thousands of troops keep the smoke curtain going, prepare the roads, bring up supplies. In front of the smoke screen, forward observation posts are manned in the flat and dangerous hundred yards between the the winter doles and the Rhine. This picture shows how the smoke curtain is made - by hand canisters lit by fuse and my mechanical smoke generators mounted on special vehicle.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we are transported back to the final weeks of World War Two in Europe. The image captures the intense preparations made by British troops as they gear up for their monumental push into Germany. Along the picturesque banks of the Rhine, thousands of determined soldiers tirelessly maintain a smoke curtain, ensuring strategic advantage and concealment. As our eyes wander across the scene, we witness the meticulous efforts put forth by these brave men. They diligently prepare roads and transport vital supplies to support their impending advance. In front of this smokescreen lies a perilous hundred-yard stretch between winter-drenched trenches and the mighty Rhine River - an area fraught with danger yet crucial for maintaining forward observation posts. This particular snapshot showcases how this essential smoke curtain is created. We see hand canisters being ignited by fuses alongside mechanical smoke generators mounted on specialized vehicles. These ingenious methods combine to shroud their movements from prying enemy eyes, providing them with a tactical edge during this critical phase of warfare. Taken on March 23rd, 1945, this photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during one of history's darkest chapters. It encapsulates both the ingenuity and bravery exhibited by those who fought valiantly against tyranny in order to secure peace for future generations.
