Surgical Instruments for amputation. C017 / 3437

Plate from 18th century encyclopedia showing illustrations of various instruments for amputation, cataract surgery and also various cannulae, and a tourniquet. Couching is the earliest documented form of cataract surgery. As a cataract is a clouding in the lens of the eye, couching is a technique of dislodging the lens, thus removing the opacity. Although couching is no longer part of ophthalmic surgical practice, it was a precursor to modern cataract surgery. A tourniquet is a constricting or compressing device, specifically a bandage, used to control venous and arterial circulation to an extremity for a period of time. A cannula is a tube that can be inserted into the body, often for the delivery or removal of fluid or for the gathering of data. Also shown are bone saws and knives for amputation

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the 18th century encyclopedia takes us back in time to explore the fascinating world of surgical instruments. The image showcases a diverse array of tools used for amputation, cataract surgery, and various medical procedures. Intriguingly, we can observe illustrations of bone saws and knives specifically designed for amputations. These instruments were crucial in the removal of diseased or injured limbs, highlighting the advancements made in surgical techniques during that era. The print also features instruments related to eye surgeries such as couching needles and cannulae. Couching, an ancient method predating modern cataract surgery, involved dislodging the lens to eliminate cloudiness caused by cataracts. This technique paved the way for our current understanding and treatment of this common ocular condition. Additionally, a tourniquet is depicted—a vital device used to control blood circulation during surgeries on extremities. Its purpose was to temporarily restrict venous and arterial flow in order to minimize bleeding. Overall, this historical snapshot provides valuable insights into early surgical practices while showcasing how far medical science has come since then. It serves as a reminder of humanity's continuous quest for knowledge and improvement in the field of medicine.
