Bank of England presents historic strip of pavement to city. Scanes architecture preserved

Bank of England presents historic strip of pavement to city.
Scanes architecture preserved.
An unusual gift, a historic strip of pavement at the Tivoli Corner of the Bank, hitherto enclosed by iron railings is to be presented to the City Corporation by the Bank of England.
The Lord Mayor will receive the gift on September 15.
The corner, at the junction of Princess Street and Lothbury, is one of the most interesting features of the Bank from an architectural point of view. At the time it was decide to rebuild the Bank the trustees of Sir John Scanes Museum protested against the design, being altered and the city corporation simultaneously urged the necessity of widening Princes Street. The difficulty was overcome by the gift, which provides a public short cut between Princess Street and Lothbury through the interior of the new Tivoli. Scanes original design will be preserved.

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Bank of England has presented a truly unique gift to the City Corporation - a historic strip of pavement at the Tivoli Corner. This corner, located at the junction of Princess Street and Lothbury, holds great architectural significance and is one of the most captivating features of the Bank. When plans were made to rebuild the Bank, there was opposition from Sir John Scanes Museum trustees who wanted to preserve its original design. Simultaneously, the city corporation emphasized the need for widening Princes Street. However, an ingenious solution was found through this generous gift from the Bank. By presenting this strip of pavement enclosed by iron railings to the City Corporation, a public shortcut between Princess Street and Lothbury will be created within the interior of the new Tivoli building while preserving Scanes' original design. The Lord Mayor will receive this extraordinary present on September 15th. In this print captured on August 27th, 1936 by TopFoto. co. uk (not affiliated with any company), we can see firsthand how this historic Tivoli corner is being preserved thanks to this remarkable gesture from The Bank of England. It serves as a testament to both their commitment towards conserving our architectural heritage and their dedication in strengthening ties with London's governing body.
