EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic HMS Cleopatra at the Devonport frigate complex in Plymouth, Devon, in 1977. The impressive Devonport frigate complex was just completed that year and served as a covered refitting facility for frigates and destroyers. In this image, the majestic HMS Cleopatra (F28) can be seen berthed in the covered dock. Built at Devonport and launched in 1964, this formidable ship played a crucial role in the Beira Patrol, preventing oil from reaching landlocked Rhodesia through Mozambique. The year this photograph was taken also marked an important event for HMS Cleopatra - it participated in the fleet review held to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee. However, by the early 1980s, signs of aging became evident on this valiant frigate. Consequently, on January 31st, 1982, she was decommissioned and sadly sold for scrap the following year. This image not only showcases a significant moment in naval history but also highlights Britain's industrial prowess during that era. The presence of cranes towering above emphasizes the scale of shipbuilding activities taking place at Devonport's naval dockyard. Photographed by Michael Walters from Paul Walters Worldwide Photography Ltd. , this stunning snapshot offers a glimpse into naval warfare and serves as a testament to both British engineering excellence and maritime heritage.
