EDITORS COMMENTS
In August 1914, as the shadows of war loomed over Europe, a Brigade of British Royal Marines made their way through the picturesque streets of Ostend, Belgium. The Brigade was a formidable force, comprised of Battalions from each of the Royal Marine home divisions: Portsmouth, Plymouth, and Chatham. Their arrival in Ostend marked the beginning of their involvement in the First World War. The Marines were greeted by local residents, many of whom had gathered to catch a glimpse of the brave soldiers. Children clung to their mothers' skirts, their wide eyes fixed on the uniformed men who marched past, their faces a mixture of awe and curiosity. The Marines, in turn, offered reassuring smiles and waves, their expressions a testament to their unwavering determination and resolve. The Brigade's stay in Ostend was brief, lasting only four days. The Marines were soon pulled back, their mission in Belgium unfinished but their presence a crucial part of the Allied forces' efforts to defend the country against the invading German army. This photograph captures a moment in history, a fleeting instant in time when the Marines and the people of Ostend came together, bound by the shared experience of a world on the brink of war. The image is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the Royal Marines during the First World War, a conflict that would claim the lives of over 22,000 Marines. Today, this photograph stands as a testament to the bravery and resilience of the Royal Marines, a symbol of the enduring bond between the British military and the people of Belgium, and a reminder of the history that connects us all.
