EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning engraving depicts a scene from Torquato Tasso's epic poem "Gerusalemme Liberata" (Jerusalem Delivered), first published in 1581. The Italian poet Tasso, born in 1544, wrote this work during the 16th century, a time of great artistic and literary flourishing in Italy. The poem, which is divided into fifteen cantos, tells the story of the First Crusade and the siege of Jerusalem. In this particular image, taken from a 1788 Venice print, we see Godfrey of Bouillon, the leader of the Crusaders, standing at the foot of the city walls of Jerusalem. He is shown in the act of delivering a speech to his knights, rallying them for the final assault on the city. The scene is mythified and filled with the grandeur and heroism of the epic tradition. The engraving is a visual representation of the text, which was widely read and admired during the 18th century, not only in Italy but also in other parts of Europe, including Catalonia in Spain. The poem was translated into various languages, including Latin, and its influence can be seen in the modern age literature. This print is now part of the Episcopal Library in Barcelona, Spain, and serves as a reminder of the enduring power of Tasso's poetry and the importance of the Crusades in European history.
