Wright Brothers 1906 Patent
Submitted in 1903, the Wright brothers finally received this patent in 1906 for their airplane that they tested in North Carolina. Their application included detailed descriptions of their aeronautical innovations. With the receipt of their patent, the Wrights had control over their design- they could grant or deny permission to use their design and were entitled to a royalty. Nevertheless, the Wrights started a large legal suit against Glenn Curtiss after he designed a plane that had many of the Wrights innovations in it. Dragging on for years, the case was never settled to the Wrights satisfaction

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the historic Wright Brothers 1906 Patent, a significant milestone in aviation history. Submitted in 1903 and granted three years later, this patent symbolizes the culmination of the Wright brothers' relentless pursuit of flight. The photograph beautifully captures this pivotal moment as it immortalizes their groundbreaking airplane design that was extensively tested in North Carolina. The patent itself represents more than just legal recognition; it bestowed upon Orville and Wilbur Wright complete control over their revolutionary aircraft. With this newfound authority, they possessed the power to grant or deny permission for others to use their design while also being entitled to royalties. However, controversy soon emerged when Glenn Curtiss designed an aircraft that incorporated many of the Wrights' innovative concepts. This sparked a protracted legal battle between these aviation pioneers which lasted for several years but ultimately failed to reach a satisfactory resolution for the Wright brothers. As we gaze upon this remarkable image, we are reminded not only of the immense impact made by Orville and Wilbur's invention but also of the challenges they faced in protecting their intellectual property rights. Their unwavering determination forever altered human civilization by opening up new horizons and possibilities within our skies.
