EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning portrait captures the elegance and regal beauty of Archduchess Maria Magdalena of Austria, a prominent figure in 17th-century Europe. Painted by Justus Sustermans, a renowned artist of the time, this artwork showcases the archduchess in all her glory. Maria Magdalena was not only known for her striking looks but also for her significant role as co-regent during the minority of her son, Grand Duke Ferdinando. After marrying Cosimo II de Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, she became an influential figure within the Medici dynasty. In this painting, Maria Magdalena is depicted wearing an exquisite royal dress adorned with intricate details and vibrant colors. Her crown symbolizes her status as a princess and highlights her noble lineage as part of the Habsburg family. The artist's attention to detail is evident in every brushstroke; from the delicate lace on Maria Magdalena's sleeves to the subtle play of light on her face. Sustermans masterfully captures both her physical beauty and inner strength. Today, this remarkable piece can be found at the State Museum of History and Art in Serpukhov, Russia. It serves as a testament to Maria Magdalena's enduring legacy as one of Austria's most influential archduchesses during a pivotal era in European history.
