EDITORS COMMENTS
In this intriguing group portrait, taken at the Hertfordshire home of the Earl of Strathmore in 1920, we find four individuals whose lives would intertwine with the course of history. Seated on the left is Lady Elizabeth Bowes Lyon (later Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother) (1900-2002), the future monarch of the United Kingdom, radiant in her youth and elegance. Next to her, at the top of the image, is Prince Paul of Yugoslavia (1893-1976), the eldest son of King Peter I of Serbia and Prince and Princess Alexander of Serbia. Prince Paul would later serve as regent and then king of Yugoslavia following the assassination of his nephew, King Alexander I, in 1934. To the right of Lady Elizabeth is her mother, Cecilia Bowes-Lyon, Countess of Strathmore and Kinghorne (1867-1938), a woman of great charm and grace, who would become the mother of the future Queen Consort of the United Kingdom. At the bottom of the photograph is Elizabeth's brother, The Hon. David Bowes Lyon (1902-1961). The siblings share a warm and affectionate expression, reflecting the close bond between them. This image offers a rare glimpse into the lives of these influential figures during a pivotal moment in history, as they gathered in the English countryside, unaware of the significant roles they would each play in their respective countries and the world at large.
